Women's Thermal Shirt: How to Choose and When to Use It

Maglia Termica Donna: Come Sceglierla e Quando Usarla

Women's thermal shirts do not generate heat on their own: they manage sweat and retain the heat the body already produces, creating a dry and stable microclimate under clothing. The right choice depends on two concrete factors: the temperature in which you wear it and the level of physical activity you do during the day.

How does a thermal shirt really work?

A thermal shirt works as a first layer, in direct contact with the skin, and has two precise tasks. The first is to move sweat to the outside of the fabric, so the skin stays dry even during exertion, instead of remaining wet as it would with cotton. The second is to create a thin layer of warm air between the body and the fabric, which slows down the dispersion of body heat to the outside.

Risalti thermal shirts are made with seamless technology, without side seams, and are 100% produced in Italy, in Castel Goffredo (MN). The fabrics used are OEKO-TEX certified. The result is a garment that adheres well to the skin without bothering, even when worn for an entire day under other clothes.

It is therefore not a source of heat in itself, but a regulator: it manages humidity and body temperature, it does not produce them out of nothing. For this reason, the right choice depends on what you will do while wearing it: staying still in the office, walking outdoors, or training hard. For a general overview of fibers, categories and differences between the various thermal underwear garments, you can find everything in our complete guide to thermal underwear. In this article we will focus on a specific garment: the women's thermal shirt, how to choose it and how to combine it.

Which line to choose between Energy, Extreme and Merino Wool?

Risalti produces three thermal lines, designed for different situations. The main difference is between technical fiber and natural fiber, and how much heat each retains for the same fabric thickness.

  • Energy: technical fiber, light, breathable and thermoregulating. Dries quickly and is designed for those who move a lot during the day.
  • Extreme: the warmest line in the Risalti technical range, designed for intense cold and for those who remain still for a long time.
  • Merino Wool: natural fiber, warm for the same weight as technical fiber, with good natural odor control. Dries more slowly.
  • Merino Wool Tech+: combines merino wool and technical fiber, to have the natural warmth of wool with faster drying.

In general, a simple rule applies: the more natural the fabric, the warmer it keeps for the same weight, but the slower it dries. This is the compromise to keep in mind before choosing, especially if you will sweat a lot while wearing it. Here's how to navigate between outdoor temperature and type of activity.

Line Indicative temperature Recommended activity
Energy Moderate cold Sports, walks, active days outdoors
Extreme Intense cold Static or low-dynamic activities, prolonged outdoor exposure
Merino Wool Moderate to intense cold Daily use, long days, natural comfort
Merino Wool Tech+ Intense cold with movement Outdoor winter sports, hiking

If you are looking for a lightweight technical line, our Energy long-sleeved thermal shirt for women is designed specifically for active days, and is part of the Energy Women's Line. If you prefer the natural warmth of wool, take a look at the long-sleeved Merino Wool thermal shirt for women, from the Merino Wool Women's Line. If you want a more in-depth comparison only between the wool and Tech+ variants, we have dedicated an article to merino wool thermal shirts.

Long sleeve or high collar?

The classic long sleeve is the most versatile choice: it covers arms and torso well and fits both under a shirt and under a heavier sweater. It's the first garment to have if you're building your women's thermal underwear from scratch.

The high collar adds protection to the neck and nape, two areas that lose heat quickly when it's cold or windy. It's useful for those who go out early in the morning or do prolonged outdoor activities. Our Energy women's high-collar thermal shirt meets this need without sacrificing the breathability typical of the technical line.

What size should I get?

A thermal shirt only works well if it adheres to the skin like a second skin. It should not be so tight as to restrict movement, but it should not have excess fabric either: it is precisely the thin air gap between the skin and the fabric that retains body heat.

If you are undecided between two sizes, choose the tighter of the two, not the one perceived as more "loose" comfortable. A thermal shirt taken one size too large partly nullifies its effect, even when the original fabric is of excellent quality.

Also check the length, not just the width: the sleeves should cover the wrist and the bottom of the shirt should stay inside the pants even when you raise your arms. If it rides up, it leaves the lumbar area exposed, a point where you feel the cold almost immediately.

How to complete your thermal set

A complete women's thermal underwear set doesn't stop at the shirt: legs and feet must be protected with the same logic, otherwise the rest of the body will dissipate the heat that the shirt is retaining on the torso. Feet, legs, and neck are the areas that lose heat most quickly, and that's where it's worth investing after the shirt.

Underneath pants, the natural combination is Energy women's thermal leggings, with the same fiber and breathability logic as the shirt. For harsher winters, the women's Merino Wool thermal leggings follow the same principle as the wool shirt: more natural warmth, at the expense of slower drying.

On bare legs or under a skirt, women's thermal leggings give way to women's thermal tights, which cover from the waist down in a single garment and are comfortable on colder days when leggings alone are not enough. On the feet, Energy long thermal socks complete the set: cold feet remain the most common weak point, even when the shirt and leggings are the right ones.

Finally, a merino wool neck warmer protects the neck and face on windy days, and can also be worn as a multi-purpose headband. You can find the entire selection in the Women's Thermal Underwear collection.

If you have chosen a merino wool garment, follow the washing instructions in our guide on how to wash seamless underwear and merino wool: it helps the garment maintain its thermal properties longer over time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Women's Thermal Shirts

Can thermal shirts be worn under a dress shirt?

Yes, in the lightweight version like the Energy long sleeve: the seamless technology, without side seams, does not create visible marks under thin fabric. However, avoid the Extreme line or thicker wool under very tight garments, as they add bulk.

How often should I change my thermal shirt?

It should be changed after each use, like any garment in direct contact with the skin, especially if you sweat during the day. Having at least two or three in rotation prevents you from wearing it still damp the next day, and also makes it last longer.

Is the thermal shirt suitable for everyday use, not just for sports?

Yes. The Energy and Merino Wool lines are also designed for everyday use, under normal clothes, not just for physical activity. The difference is made by the outside temperature and how much you are still or moving, not the occasion of use.

Is there a men's version with the same lines?

Yes, the same technical and natural lines are also available in the men's version, with the same selection criteria related to temperature and activity. You can find all the details in our guide to men's thermal shirts.
